Their small size makes the Chihuahua a popular breed among people that are unable to take care of larger dogs. They are small enough to fit in somebody’s bag, which has also made them popular among many people that wish to keep them almost as an accessory. Despite their small size, though, the Chihuahua has a big personality. They are known for their utter devotion to their owners, and will often protect them jealously no matter what. If you are hoping to make friends with somebody that owns a Chihuahua, you may find that their four-legged friend has something to say about it.

Chihuahuas are not known for their friendliness toward strangers. If anything, they have a reputation for being an intolerant, snappy breed and it’s a reputation that is not entirely underserved. If you do meet a Chihuahua that you are not familiar with, youre unlikely to be greeted with a wagging tail. Still, though, their love and devotion toward their owners, coupled with their small size, makes them a popular breed around the world.

What many people don’t realise is that Chihuahua are an ancient breed, with a lineage tracing back for thousands of years. With such a long history and big personality, there’s some interesting facts to be told about the tiny Chihuahua.

Chihuahua Fact #10: The World’s Smallest Breed

Chihuahuas are a very small breed. So small that it would likely come as no surprise to find that they are the smallest of all dog breeds. It is normal for a Chihuahua to weigh less than 10lbs, and weights of around 6-7lbs are recommended by the International Federation of Dog Kennel Clubs for shows. The world record of smallest dog goes to Milly, a Chihuahua that was recorded at just 3.8 inches tall and, at 2 years old, she weighed in at only 1 pound.

A dog so small can also be quite delicate, so they are not really suitable around young children that are likely to play rough. This is especially the case in puppies, which can weigh just a few grams when first born. Still, though, it is their small size that helps to make the Chihuahua as popular as they are. This is partly because it makes them easier to look after, and partly because they can be great for accessorising.
